Background of the Study
In Yoruba culture, greetings are a vital part of daily interaction, serving as conduits for expressing respect, goodwill, and social hierarchy. Among community elders in Ibadan, greetings are rich with pragmatic indicators—linguistic cues that manage interpersonal relationships and signal cultural values. These indicators include tonal variations, specific honorifics, and context-dependent expressions that convey deference and communal identity (Olu, 2023). Yoruba greetings, far more than simple salutations, encapsulate complex social rituals that reinforce traditional norms and foster unity among community members. However, rapid social change and exposure to global communication styles are influencing how these greetings are delivered, potentially diluting their traditional pragmatic markers (Adebayo, 2024). This study aims to assess the pragmatic indicators present in Yoruba greetings among community elders in Ibadan, analyzing how these markers function to sustain respectful interaction and preserve cultural heritage. Field observations, audio recordings, and interviews with elders will form the basis of the research, providing insights into the evolution and current state of greeting practices in a modernizing society.

Statement of the Problem
Traditional Yoruba greetings among community elders in Ibadan, rich in pragmatic indicators, face potential erosion due to modern communication influences (Olu, 2023). The adoption of more casual and globalized greeting styles by younger generations risks weakening the culturally embedded markers of respect and social cohesion (Adebayo, 2024). This shift may lead to a loss of cultural continuity and undermine the transmission of traditional values. The paucity of empirical studies on how these pragmatic indicators are maintained or transformed necessitates a detailed examination of greeting practices to understand the implications for Yoruba social interaction.

Objectives of the Study

  • To identify key pragmatic indicators in traditional Yoruba greetings.

  • To evaluate changes in greeting practices among community elders.

  • To propose measures to preserve traditional greeting norms.

Research Questions

  • What pragmatic indicators are used in Yoruba greetings?

  • How are these indicators affected by modern influences?

  • What strategies can sustain traditional greeting practices?

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it evaluates pragmatic indicators in Yoruba greetings among community elders in Ibadan, offering insights into preserving culturally important communication practices. The findings will benefit cultural custodians, educators, and policymakers in maintaining respect and social cohesion through traditional language forms (Olu, 2023; Adebayo, 2024).

Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study is limited to Yoruba greeting practices among community elders in Ibadan and does not extend to other age groups or regions.

Definitions of Terms

  • Pragmatic Indicators: Linguistic cues that signal social functions and attitudes.

  • Yoruba Greetings: Traditional salutations in Yoruba culture.

  • Community Elders: Senior members who uphold cultural traditions.
